The place of discovery was an old, man-made sandstone cave on Bruggerberg above Brugg. Private individuals had cleared the buried entrance and unexpectedly came across the remains of a human being inside the vault on Sunday, April 5, 2020.
Unclear why the cave was cleared
The finders immediately informed the Cantonal Police of Aargau, which carried out extensive evidence-finding and started its investigation. “Why they shoveled the cave out is not clear,” said the Aargau cantonal police when asked by BLICK. The cave apparently attracts people from time to time.
The body was finally recovered and, on the orders of the Brugg-Zurzach public prosecutor, autopsied at the Aargau Institute of Forensic Medicine, as the Aargau Cantonal Police wrote in a statement.
Cause of death unclear
It is now clear that it is the body of a man who was reported missing in the canton of Zurich in April 2019. Despite investigations by the Zurich Cantonal Police, the then 24-year-old Swiss man disappeared without a trace.
The circumstances of death are currently unclear. It is also unclear when, how and why the man got into the cave, which is in rough terrain. Corresponding investigations by the Aargau Cantonal Police are underway.
