President Vladimir Putin said the nuclear-capable missile could travel more than 20 times the speed of sound and put Russia ahead of other countries.
The missile has a “gliding system” which makes it capable of sophisticated maneuvers and can make it impossible to counter.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu confirmed “the Avangard hypersonic missile launch system entered service at 10:00 Moscow time on December 27”.
It is difficult to determine whether Russia’s new Avangard hypersonic missile system is actually operational, as Moscow claims, or if it is simply an advanced stage of field trials.
Hypersonic missiles, as the name suggests, are capable of traveling very fast, above Mach 5 – that is, at least five times the speed of sound.
These missiles can be cruise-type missiles, capable of multiplying their power during their launch.
It’s not just the speed of hypersonic weapons that counts. This missile has exceptional maneuverability as it glides towards its target.
Indeed its trajectory on glide, which “surfs along the edge of the atmosphere” as one expert recently told me, presents the defense system with added problems.
