We came closest to the more practical version of the sharp “three” in the case of the E46 generation (2000 – 2006). At that time, the carmaker created a functional prototype, but in the end it just stayed with him and serial production never took place. However, BMW declassified the prototype years ago and still has it in its archives.
But now everything is different, the Munich carmaker has officially stated that the station wagon will be in the sixth generation and has also thrown in the first trailer, which shows the stern of the station wagon with its characteristic four exhaust tailpipes. The BMW M3 Touring is due to arrive next year, after the premiere of the M3 with a sedan body, hence the M4 coupe, in September this year.
Under the hood, all versions of the M3 / M4, as in the previous generation, will have a twice-supercharged three-liter six-cylinder (with internal code B58), which will do without hybrid technology. It will be available in two versions – the basic with 480 horsepower (an increase of an honest 50 horsepower compared to the previous generation) and 600 Nm of torque, the stronger version of the Competition will even strengthen to 510 horsepower and 650 Nm.
We do not yet know the specific dynamic parameters, but in the case of the sedan, we estimate that the M3 Competition could accelerate to a hundred in about 3.5 seconds, the maximum speed will be classically limited to 250 km / h.
The engine is classically paired with the eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission, but for purists – which we think is great news – there will be a manual transmission. And the good news doesn’t end there: there will be both an all-wheel drive version and a classic rear wheelbase. Purists can therefore reach for a coupe with a manual and rear-wheel drive, practically oriented individuals can reach for a station wagon with an ATV and an automatic. The sports Bavarian will thus have a much wider scope and thus a potential customer base.
The new BMW M4 Coupé and the new BMW M3 Sedan will have their joint world premiere in September 2020 in Munich, where a new car show will be held instead of Frankfurt am Main. And next year they won’t be very excited about Audi and Mercedes, as a rival for the RS4 Avant and C63 Wagon will arrive. And it would not be very sensible to underestimate him …
