Former inmate gets compensation for unworthy detention – All news on Guyana on the Internet –


The state was sentenced Monday to compensate a former prisoner of Remire-Montjoly for unworthiness of his conditions of detention.

Christophe B, imprisoned in the penitentiary center of Rémire-Montjoly from May 2011 to August 2013, obtained by the State Council for an amount of 5,500 euros due to "conditions of detention detrimental to human dignity".

Failed at first instance by the judge of the Cayenne summary, the prisoner appealed in cassation and was based on the European Convention on Human Rights which states that "nobody can be subjected to torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment"; Christophe B, who was detained during the period when Rémire-Montjoly penitentiary center knew a strong overpopulation. He then occupied several 12 m2 cells planned for two prisoners but which received three.
