Alfa Romeo F1 scored four points in Bahrain thanks to Valtteri Bottas, and Guanyu Zhou set the fastest lap in the race. Out of the top 10, he did not score a point, but he prevented Pierre Gasly and Alpine from adding one to those of ninth place, as explained by Xevi Pujolar.

“Zhou lost ground at the start by skating on the last part of the flight” I declared Pujolar. “After that we tried to see if we could get back into the fight, towards the middle of the race. That’s why we also tried a soft tire strategy in the last part of the race, in the third stint. “

The third stint not giving satisfaction, Alfa Romeo changed tactics and decided to aim for the fastest lap in the race: “We didn’t really pick up the pace like we wanted before the last stop. The stint was probably a bit too difficult.”

And to confirm that the objective was indeed to remove a point from Alpine: “We tried to do at least some teamwork. He did a huge job to set the fastest lap, and then we took that point away from Alpine who, for now, is our competitor.”

With Bottas’ eighth place, Pujolar is optimistic: “The car has already been very good in testing. We have a very good base and we have developments going on at the factory. We want to keep fighting with the top of the pack, that’s our goal. We think that we should be able to do that.”
