The engines rest in Formula 1. While it is still not clear when and whether the 2020 season can start, there is already wild speculation about the 2021 season. The contracts of the top stars Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton expire this year.
The Italian sports newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport” is now reporting on Ferrari’s first offer to Vettel for a contract extension. But the German is said to have rejected!
Reduction in wages and short term
The reasons why the Italians and Vettel have not yet agreed? Ferrari apparently offered an annual salary of 12 million euros. That should still be a good third of Vettel’s current wages.
Perhaps the even bigger problem for Vettel: Ferrari should only have offered him an extension of one year. So far, the German has always signed three-year contracts, as he recently made clear. He is currently supposed to pause for at least two years.
Sainz and Ricciardo as opponents
The German online portal “Sport 1” even writes that, according to insiders, the offer was “a joke”. No wonder that Vettel still refuses.
Vettel’s options if he doesn’t agree with Ferrari? McLaren is currently the best alternative for the four-time world champion. Possible opponents in the fight for the coveted Ferrari cockpit alongside Charles Leclerc (contract until 2024) are probably Carlos Sainz (currently McLaren) and Daniel Ricciardo (Renault). (sme)
