Sunday’s race of the British stage of Formula 2 at Silverstone was held in sunny, but cooler weather than Saturday, so at different temperatures of the surface, the riders could have difficulty warming up the rubber.
Immediately after the start, Dan Tiktum and Felipe Drugovic retained the first two positions, but Christian Lundgard excellently, who started the race from the 5th position, in the first corners ahead of several rivals, including the Brazilian, and began to pursue the leader.
On the first lap, Guan Yu Zhou overtook Mick Schumacher and took 7th position, but after contact with Callum Ilott turned Yuki Tsunoda’s car, because of this, a virtual safety car mode was announced. By the way, the British driver of the UNI-Virtuosi team was fined a little later for this trick.
Nikita Mazepin, after four laps, rode 6th, Robert Shvartsman also played several positions at the start and moved to 11th place, Artem Markelov moved to 16th position, but was soon outstripped by Luca Giotto.
Schwartzman held close to Jack Aitken, with less than a second between their cars, and an attack could be expected soon. It was evident that in the corners Robert was approaching his opponent, but on the straight lines the Briton managed to break away.
On lap 9, Alott overtook Drugovich and moved to 4th position. On the next lap, Guan Yu Zhou made a beautiful attack, at once ahead of both Mazepin and Drugovich, after which he moved to 5th place. Probably, some consolation for Nikita was that he also overtook the Brazilian.
On lap 11, Schwartzman finally dealt with Aitken, his next target was Matsushita, who was riding 9th, and it looked like Robert was already catching up with him.
When the race reached the equator, Tiktum continued to lead with a two-second lead over Lundgard, but it was clear that the tires on his car were not in the best condition, which also affected the results of laps. In general, the entire peloton slowed down somewhat compared to the first phase of the race.
On lap 14, Ilott, who apparently managed to save rubber better than others, was ahead of Louis Deletraz and took the third position, but soon overtook Lundgard. Recall that the result of the Briton still had to add penalty seconds, so he still would not have been able to keep the second position in the race.
But on the 16th lap, a surprise occurred: in a bunch before the last turn, Ilott, Schwartzman’s main rival in the individual championship standings, turned around, and the Briton did not manage to react in time, and the engine on his car stalled. She stopped right in the middle of the track, and so that the marshals could evacuate her, the safety car drove out, and most of the riders immediately went to the pits to change the rubber.
There were some surprises here: the mechanics did not have time to secure the front left wheel on Sean Gelael’s car, and she stopped at the exit from the pit lane.
But Schwartzman was also unlucky: since the Prema team had to carry out a double pit-top, he had to wait until the car of his partner, Mik Schumacher, was serviced, but when the mechanics changed the tires on the car of the Russian driver, there was an offensive hitch, and he lost a few seconds. As a result, Robert returned to the track only 17th.
The restart went without incident, Tiktum retained the lead, Deletraz was the second, Zhou was the third. There were only two laps left before the finish line, and it was necessary to attack, which Lundgard did, ahead of the Chinese driver. On the last lap, Christian overtook Deletraz as well, taking advantage of the Swiss’s mistake, and now he had only to catch up with the leader.
Guang Yu Zhou did not keep the car on the track, he was turned around, but he managed to get back on the track, although he rolled back to the very end of the top ten.
In the last corners of the final lap of the distance, Tiktum, the DAMS driver, still managed to contain the onslaught of Lundgard, and he crossed the finish line first, ahead of the Dane by only three tenths. On the same lap, Schwarzman overtook Mik Schumacher and finished 13th.
Nikita Mazepin, the winner of yesterday’s race, finished fifth, which is generally not bad, Artyom Markelov took 11th place.
Since Ilott retired, Robert Schwartzman remained on the first line of the individual standings, but Lundgard, who took 2nd place today, got close to them. After four stages of the season, he has 69 points, Ilott – 73, Schwartzman – 81. Nikita Mazepin climbed to the fourth line at the end of the British weekend, gaining 58 points.
The next stage of Formula 2 will be held in a week at the same Silverstone.
