Cheers after 4-2 victory – France is world champion
MoscowFrance celebrates the world title: on the streets, in the bars, the living rooms. It is a success to head – it happens at the jubilee celebrations after the victory of their team over Croatia (4: 2), it is riots in several French cities.
The celebrations of hundreds of thousands of fans were overshadowed in the night of Monday, especially in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Ajaccio of incidents, the news agency AFP reported. In the capital, a man was hospitalized after a fight badly injured. Around 30 young people also plundered a shop on the boulevard Champs-Elysées, the police drove them with tear gas.
Clashes of about 100 mostly young fans with the police were also in Lyon. In Marseille, two policemen were injured in clashes. Ten people were arrested. In Ajaccio French and Croatian fans clashed.
Since the celebrations in the Moscow Luschniki Stadium had long since ended. There was no fun on Sunday evening – apart from the team – as Emmanuel Macron. The French President cheered in a Snapchat video of midfielder Paul Pogba and learned from defender Benjamin Mendy the dance figure “Dab”. After the 4-2 victory of the French national team against Croatia, he kissed the country's president, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, to the comfort of both cheeks.
Afterwards, Macron took on the forehead of the top players Kylian Mbappé and Antoine Griezmann. Also, the World Cup trophy was a wet kiss pressed – especially wet, perhaps, since Macron was soaking wet after a rainfall anyway. While Russian President Vladimir Putin stayed dry under a wing, the rain did not seem to dampen Macron's mood. Later he wrote via Twitter to the Équipe Tricolore: “THANK YOU.”
And the prospects for more celebrations are good. For the troupe of world champion coach Didier Deschamps is still young. In two or four years, they reach their full strength, repeated Deschamps several times during the World Cup in Russia. “This team has a future for the next European Championship and the next World Cup,” former coach of the Equipe Tricolore Raymond Domenech agreed.
Goalkeeper Antoine Griezmann, maybe the face of this World Cup generation, is 27 years old. And thus one of the older in the team. Kylian Mbappé is the youngest. He also met in the final. And then said, “To be world champion is already a message, but I want to get even better.”
Mbappé is not even 20 years old and was voted the best young professional of the tournament. There are also players like Benjamin Pavard of VfB Stuttgart, 22, full-back colleague Lucas Hernandez 22 years, the 24 and 25-year-old center-backs Raphael Varane and Samuel Umtiti. Or Pogba, also only 25 years old.
The list could be continued. Deschamps dared to take the step and took 14 players who did not belong to the European Championship squad two years ago. They had gone on an expedition in Russia, stressed the coach.
Arriving early Monday evening on the legendary Champs-Élysées, the team is likely to face a lavish reception. That should also help to realize what the team has achieved. “At the moment, my players do not know what it means to be World Champions,” said Deschamps.
