Three years have passed since the premiere “Islands dogs “, seven – since Wes Anderson gathered his favorite actors in front of the camera for the last time (” Grand Budapest Hotel “). The media had been writing about The French Dispatch for several years. Back in 2018, it was said that the American’s latest work would be Later on new names that the artist collects for the film began to come to light. American Film Festival in Wroclaw. What about the “French Courier from Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun”?
Wes Anderson returns with a new movie. This time it’s about a certain magazine
Anderson’s latest film is the first short film in his career. When the director was 16, he discovered The New York Times – he was said to have always read the stories first. Years later, he finally decided to make a work inspired by the medium that accompanied him for almost his entire life. The main axis of the film is therefore the “funeral of the editor-in-chief” of a supplement to a local newspaper, published in the fictional French town of Ennui-sur-Blasé. Arthur Howitzer Jr. (Bill Murray) decided that the magazine itself would also leave with him. He carefully prepared the latest edition with the editors as if he were his own testament. He recalled “No crying”, discussing the goodbye topics in advance.
Anderson’s latest film screening history included in the issue. We have several thematic segments for which individual editors are responsible and a whole kaleidoscope of characters: a murderer-painter imprisoned in prison, a guardian posing for his acts, a young revolutionist entering romans with a journalist who edited his political manifesto, the son of a commissioner or lieutenant kidnapped for ransom under cover. These roles were played by, among others Benicio Del Toro, Léa Seydoux, Timothée Chalamet and Frances McDormand, and these are just a few of the names that scroll across the screen.
The “French Courier” gathers big names on the screen. But it doesn’t give them enough space
All creativity Anderson it is highly formalistic. However, while I happened to like the heroes of his earlier films, this time I am rather indifferent to both the characters and the action of “French Courier”.
It is true, this image is pampered in every detail – Anderson took care of the details, developed storyboards, frame by frame carefully drawing his vision. As always, we have intense colors, a multitude of details and symmetry. The problem is that the creator adds short, fragmented ones to the already distracting convention history. As a result, it’s hard to really get involved in what is happening on the screen. I feel overwhelmed, I don’t care about the characters or their stories.
The accumulation of everything is huge – we are dealing in the film, as the editor put it “Independent“in his text, with” blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos “, i.e. short, sometimes even a few seconds, speeches of cream Hollywood. Some of the actors appear on the screen unnoticed without uttering a line.
But Anderson’s fans will surely be satisfied. The “French Courier” may become the American’s magnum opus, and he certainly aspires to this role (although does not Wes really try to go a step further with each subsequent film?). It is a work that combines his greatest passions, favorite actors and associates, created with extraordinary panache, great nostalgia and tenderness. It is also one of the most important and most anticipated premier this year, which is undoubtedly worth seeing on the big screen. It is not known how long we will have to wait for the next such opportunity, although the current announcements indicate that “Asteroid City” would debut in cinemas next year.
