In front of the collapsed house, cold and terrified householders who miraculously survived were waiting for the news.
The inhabitants of Polana, a district of Ustroń, will remember Sunday morning for a long time. A few minutes before 10 o’clock there was a huge explosion. – A terrible bang, shook the house and the ground. I thought that a bomb had fallen on Ustroń – one of the neighbors of the house on Polanska Street, where the catastrophe happened, tells us. The force of the explosion was so great that shards of glass from the windows could be found on the balconies of houses more than a hundred meters away.
“Everybody started calling the fire department, but we have a professional fire department and volunteers in the neighborhood. The guys were there in five minutes – recalls the woman.

Nothing left of the house. It folded up like a house of cards. About an hour after the explosion, firefighters pulled a badly burned woman out of the rubble. They also found seven 11-kilogram propane gas cylinders in the rubble. Were they filled? Firefighters do not provide information. It is known, however, that during the search of the rubble there were several uncontrolled rock bursts. What caused it, experts will explain.
Residents mention that the building that collapsed consisted of two parts. A new part was added to the old house. There were four people in the house at the time of the explosion. Altogether, they were inhabited by two families. Some of the household members survived because she was at work at the time.
Explosion in Ustroń. Firefighters are searching the rubble
– Our activities focus on searching for the missing, clearing the building of rubble and extinguishing the fire that is smoldering in the rubble – informs Superbrigadier Arkadiusz Przybyła, Deputy Chief Commander of the State Fire Service. He adds that firefighters first searched places where people may be in the morning: the bathroom and the room. No one was found there. More than half of the collapsed house has now been searched. 140 firefighters, supported by rescuers with dogs, participate in the action.
