The German secret services believe that on January 21, China’s leader, Xi Jinping, called the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, asking him to reserve information that the virus was transmitted from human human and postpone the worldwide declaration of a pandemic. The revelation appears in a report by the Bundesnachrichtendienst released by the German magazine Der Spiegel, but has already been denied by the WHO.
Following the news from Der Spiegel, the World Health Organization issued a statement saying that the German magazine’s revelation of “a telephone conversation between WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and President Xi Jingping of China , are unfounded and false ”. The same statement says that “Dr. Tedros and the President Xi didn’t speak on January 21st and never spoke on the phone“. Seven days after the alleged call, on January 28, the WHO leader and the Chinese president had a face-to-face meeting in Beijing.
The WHO also says that this news “inaccurate distracts and undermines the efforts of the World Health Organization and the world to end the Covid-19 pandemic” and adds that “China confirmed the human-to-human transmission of the new coronavirus in 20 of January”. The pandemic declaration, however, only took place on March 11.
The German secret report released by Der Spiegel further estimated that due to the information policy followed by China, the world lost “four to six weeks in fighting the virus”. The report in the German magazine strengthens those who believe, such as U.S. President Donald Trump, that China has hidden information from the rest of the world.
The United States will also be investigating China’s role in this process and there are even two states (Missouri and Mississippi) that will sue Beijing. Australia also wants an investigation into China in the name of “transparency”. In Germany, the German tabloid Bild presented an account to China worth 149 billion euros, accompanied by the phrase: “This is what China owes us already”. Several countries are reviewing diplomatic relations with China following this pandemic.
