Hamburger SV loses in the DFB Cup against RB Leipzig: The last swing

The cup of the Hamburger SV was just sealed, as announced again the supporters of the club in the north curve. Hardly any of them had left the fan block before the final whistle, and now they waved their blue scarves there again and said goodbye to their team with loud applause and cheers. It was almost as loud as in the 24th minute.

At this moment, HSV had the role of subordinate second division in the DFB Cup semi-final against RB Leipzig (1: 3) filed. Responsible for this was Bakery Jatta: The 20-year-old had conquered the ball on the left wing impressive against Leipzig Kevin Kampl and seconds later directly completed. It was a reminder of the special laws in the cup competition and the fact that even in the second division since weeks winless HSV can be good for a surprise. With a dose of courage and luck; against the second best team of the Bundesliga second half, mind you.

Jattas shot dropped from about 30 meters over Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulasci away. The interim equalization to 1: 1 aroused the audience, but above all, Jatta spurred on the own team. Later he was awarded as a player of the game. "I am very surprised that a player of the team, which loses here 1: 3, is awarded," said Leipzig coach Ralf Rangnick. But he also said: "We could have fallen behind", and he meant that phase in which the HSV not only combative held, but also set playful accents.

Rangnick's hymn of praise on RB Leipzig in video:

Santos is applying for bigger tasks

Especially Douglas Santos fell on the real left-back played this time in the central midfield and leveraged from there Leipzig defensive. At the latest, when the Brazilian had started two great chances for Khaled Narey (32nd minute / 42nd) with fine passes, regular stadium-goers should have rubbed their eyes and asked: Is this really the HSV, who from his past three home games in the second division just got one point? The HSV, who against Darmstadt (2: 3), Magdeburg (1: 2) and Aue (1: 1) was as creative as a writer with writer's block? The answer is yes and no.

The HSV brought the best defense of the Bundesliga in danger and Santos has once again underlined why he allegedly want to commit various top clubs. However, the urge phase of HSV took place only between the 24th and 53rd minute. For the entry into the cup final of Berlin and the first final since 1987 but "everything would have to be right" (Hannes Wolf). Whether the HSV coach so alluded to the many individual mistakes of his team?

One thing is certain: Vasilije Janjicic caught a bitter day. The corner kick to 1: 0 by a header from Yussuf Poulsen (12) caused the 20-year-old with a bad pass in the game structure; shortly after the break, the Swiss wanted to clear a sharp cross, but hit his own net to 1: 2. After the renewed deficit in the 53rd minute of HSV Leipzig could barely oppose anything. In the end, the Hamburg were even lucky that the semi-final went out only 1: 3.

If the opponent does not play, the HSV fails

But the final score seemed almost negligible shortly after the final whistle. The fans had certainly clapped at the end also because the club has put on the most successful cup round since 2009. Above all, the supporters should have honored the way they performed against Leipzig, the courage and the risk. Errors like that of Janjicic at the 1: 2 were accompanied by "only-der-HSV" -calls, at halftime the team received standing ovations. It is the last momentum that the team has to take for the remaining four games in the second division, for the return to the Bundesliga.

And that could be difficult – even if so far the results against the direct competitors were correct. On Sunday, the team must end its winless series of five games at Table Fourth Union Berlin. If not, the HSV could even slip to fourth place and out of the ascent ranks.

Coach Wolf expects a different game in Berlin than in the cup, so a counterpart, who is lower than Leipzig, who leaves the game to HSV. Even Ingolstadt on the 32nd or Duisburg on matchday 34 will hardly be able to counterbalance each other, but have to be transferred to the top with pace and passes. Especially against such teams and destructive ways of playing, the HSV but recently failed regularly: The club is in the second half of the table with 16 points from 13 games only eleventh.

The burgers from Hamburg can only show games as spirited as in the semi-finals, if they do not have to play the game themselves, if their opponents are not Regensburg but Leipzig. But for the Hamburger SV must rise first. At this end of the season, the HSV is measured at the end.

Hamburger SV – RB Leipzig 1: 3 (1: 1)
