The CEO of Mexican Social Security InstituteZoé Robledo Aburto, announced that the Wellness Health Plan integrates traditional medicine and community knowledge for the benefit of the population, particularly those living in rural areas.

In a morning press conference with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he reported that 6 thousand 664 midwives, 754 doctors and traditional doctors, as well as 15 thousand 775 rural volunteers contribute to health care in the most remote regions of the country.

“Midwives have been integrated for 43 years in the process and model of comprehensive health care of IMSS Bienestar, since its birth as Coplamar”, he added.

The model IMSS Welfare, he said, seeks traditional medicine and the organized participation of the community. At the same time, it consolidates medical care in first and second level health units in order to guarantee the right to health.

The Undersecretary of Prevention and Health PromotionHugo López Gatell Ramírez, highlighted that the Government of Mexico, through the Health Secretary and of National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt)promotes concrete actions to preserve the public sense of traditional medicine and articulate it with health services.

From the public sector, he said, the ancestral trade of midwifery is defended, the legacy of native peoples is recognized and attention to historically marginalized groups is prioritized. He announced that the federation is preparing a regulation focused on giving legal certainty to this practice.
