Apple’s mobile payment service finally operates in Mexico, initially working with Mastercard credit and debit cards issued by Citibanamex and Banorte, as well as those of American Express.
To use this form of payment, customers must hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a terminal to make a contactless payment.
Apple Pay, a service that was launched by the technology company in 2014, is accepted in supermarkets, retail stores, clothing stores, pharmacies, restaurants, hotels and other places, in addition to apps and online purchases.
For example, in the country it can be used in 7-Eleven, in food chains operated in Mexico by Alsea (Chili’s, Domino’s, Italianni’s, PF Chang’s and The Cheesecake Factory), in Petco, Grupo Xcaret and MacStore, as well as in the Rappi, Fancy and HotelTonight apps, among others.
“It is a safer way to pay that avoids, as much as possible, touching buttons or exchanging money,” said Apple on the service’s website.
“When you make a purchase, Apple Pay uses a specific device number and a unique transaction code. In this way, your card number is never stored on the device or on Apple’s servers ”, he added.
Mastercard also boasted that every Apple Pay purchase is secure, authenticating via Face ID, Touch ID, or the device’s passcode, as well as a unique dynamic security code for each transaction.
“It will also be available soon to Inbursa Mastercard cardholders,” he said in a statement.
“Our shopping habits are evolving. Consumers are moving away from cash more than ever and opting for digital and contactless payment experiences, ”said Kiki Del Valle, Executive Vice President of Market Development at Mastercard for Latin America and the Caribbean.
To configure Apple Pay, open the Wallet application, touch the plus sign and follow the steps to add credit or debit cards.
