Immunologist Reveals Three Ways To Reduce Risk Of Infecting Omicron BA.5 Subvariant

The BA.5 subvariant is dominating in many countries.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 omicron subvarian BA.5 increasingly makes people anxious because it is dominating in a number of countries. The variant is said to have caused an increase in hospitalizations, a clear reminder that the Covid-19 pandemic is not over.

The good news is, there are ways you can do to avoid transmission. Leading British immunologist Denis Kinane offers some tips for protecting yourself from BA.5.

The scientist who founded Cignpost Diagnostics explained that BA.5, like other variants, still poses a severe threat to vulnerable groups. Therefore, the public needs to take reasonable precautions, such as health protocol in general.

Kinane suggests wearing masker in a closed room during mass events and undergo a Covid-19 test if they feel they have the virus. Implementing precautions in hospitals, crowded places, and when around vulnerable people also makes sense.

“It should also be remembered that vaccination or booster doesn’t prevent you from getting Covid-19, but it protects most people from hospitalization,” Kinane said.

Kinane warned that the corona virus had not disappeared at all and was able to continue to mutate. While vaccination programs allow control of virus transmission, reduced viral immunity to vaccines has the potential to lead to increased hospitalizations.
