President Andrés Manuel López Obrador authorized this Wednesday to keep long weekends to detonate domestic tourism, reported this afternoon Miguel Torruco, head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur).
“I would like to give good news, that today in the afternoon that I spoke with the President of the Republic, I authorize myself to announce that to detonate domestic tourism, which is essential, they will stay on long weekends,” he explained today to the participate in the press conference of the Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, where the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic in Mexico is reported.
From the National Palace, the secretary explained that long weekends increase hotel occupancy by more than 7 points, there are more than 2 million tourists staying in hotels that detonate the productive apparatus.
In addition, five million additional tourists travel the length and breadth of the national territory, especially in the 121 Magical Towns, with a spill of 38 thousand 400 million pesos.
“The tourist activity is not only essential for the country, but a priority, therefore we must reactivate it urgently to avoid further job losses and greater damages, of course, respecting the rigor of the traffic lights that have been launched by the Ministry of Health “Torruco said.
“I will continue to insist on some other points that the business leadership has also proposed to us so that the sector can move forward,” added the official.
In early February of this year, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador proposed to disappear on long weekends from the next school year, to recover historical memory.
Long weekends were born in 2006 from an amendment to the Federal Labor Law, which established that the rest days corresponding to the commemorations of March 21, Natalicio de Benito Juárez; February 5, Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Constitution; and on November 20, the beginning of the Mexican Revolution Movement, be holidays the following immediate Monday.
