Moscow always has adequate answers to any steps taken by the United States, said Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov, commenting on the US decision to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty (DON). His words are quoted by TASS.
He noted that Russia does not see the tragedy in the fact that the United States decided to withdraw from the DON agreements. In his opinion, Moscow responded to a statement by US President Donald Trump calmly and pragmatically. “It is very sad, very sad that we are losing another treaty in the field of international security,” Antonov said.
Earlier on May 22, it became known about a joint statement by the EU Foreign Ministers regarding the US decision to withdraw from the Don agreements. France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Sweden signed the communique. It said that the EU regrets the decision of Washington, although it understands the concerns of the American side in connection with violations of the treaty by Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry received from the United States a notice of the decision on DON. According to Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, Washington’s claims to Moscow are not based on anything. Russia is committed to DON and will work to preserve it, the deputy minister said.
On May 21, US President Donald Trump announced the country’s withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty. US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo noted that the decision takes effect six months later, starting Friday, May 22.
