One of the main features of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S are their SSD storage units, which give them the ability to cut loading time for games impressively. However, SSDs not only improve that aspect, but thanks to their compression and decompression capacity, games take up less space on consoles. The PlayStation 5 is the one that offers a higher compression factor. Until now little has been said about the advantages that the SSD offers in this regard and recently Insomniac Games mentioned how much it benefits Marvel’s Spider-Man compression power.
Via Twitter, Mike Fitzgerald, CTO of Insomniac Games currently working at Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Y Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, talked about how Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered Y Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales They take advantage of the speed of the SSD of the PlayStation 5 to reduce the size of each installation.
In case you missed it: a glitch of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales turn the superhero into a brick.
Marvel’s Spider-Man is less heavy on PlayStation 5
According to the director, the installation weight of both titles is around 25% less compared to that of the PlayStation 4 versions. If you think this is not enough, you should take into account that the PlayStation 5 versions are larger. than those of PlayStation 4 beforehand, as they include models with higher resolution, textures and better audio.
As a result, gamers can worry less about wasting space on the SSD, apart from faster downloads. This is precisely something that Mark Cerny spoke about in the first conference dedicated to the PlayStation 5 and Fitzgerald took the opportunity to point it out.
As you may recall, the PlayStation 5 not only features a fast transfer speed SSD, but also includes Kraken compression and decompression technology, courtesy of Oodle Textures, which allow it to further amplify the compression factor, which means that games can take up less space on the SSD and Kraken supports decompression when running.
Worth noting that it all went according to plan!
