Instagram tip: this is how you adjust who can send you a private message

Instagram

Some private messages on Instagram don’t make you too happy, especially if they are sexually oriented or come from a stalker. Fortunately, you can control who can send you private messages on Instagram. We show how.

By default, Instagram allows anyone to send you a private message. Since the medium does not do spam detection, this simply means that you automatically end up in spam groups, or receive messages from people you would rather not speak (anymore). Fortunately, the social medium does offer two options to combat such spam. We’ll go through them briefly below.

  • Message Requests: Depending on how your account is set up, some people may only send you message requests. You must then accept it to respond to the message. You can turn this off, so people can no longer send message requests. By the way, you only receive requests from people you don’t follow.
  • group chats: By default anyone can add you to a group conversation, whether you follow them or not is irrelevant. By adjusting the setting, only people you follow can add you to a group conversation. You can still be added, but only by people you know.

Customize message request settings

You can adjust the message request settings for people who follow you on Instagram as well as people you don’t know (others). Below we go through that process.

  1. Open Instagram op Android of iOS
  2. Click on you at the bottom right profile icon
  3. Then click on the top right hamburger menu
  4. Then choose Settings
  5. Then navigate to Privacy and Chat Messages
  6. click on Your followers on Instagram of Others on Instagram and choose Not received if you don’t want to receive message requests
