Iran said on Saturday that coronavirus deaths in the country surpassed the 30,000-person barrier.
According to the announcement of the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health, Sima Sadat Lari, the pandemic has claimed 30,123 lives in the Islamic Republic, after adding 253 deaths to the official count.
Iran has been trying to contain the spread of the coronavirus since it announced its first positives in February. It suffers the worst outbreak in the Middle East, with more than 526,000 confirmed infections.
In recent weeks, the country has seen the daily death toll from COVID-19 surpass its previous records. The consequences of the health crisis have hit a country whose economy was already paralyzed by extensive United States sanctions.
