At the corner of Panamalaan and Borneolaan in Amsterdam, Essalih was shot at around 03:30 that night. He died on the spot. It is not clear whether Essalih was the victim of a planned liquidation or whether it was possibly a fight that got out of hand.
At least three people are involved in the deadly shooting incident. In July, a suspect was arrested whose role is still under investigation. He is now free again. A second suspect was arrested on August 27 and is on remand. The third suspect in the investigation is Ismail el Bakali, who has been on the run for some time. He may have fled to Spain in a car. The 21-year-old Amsterdammer knew the victim. The night in question he was still in the vicinity of the Panamalaan. He was checked by an officer and had to show his identity card. Camera images from the neighborhood show that El Bakali is sitting on the back of a scooter with someone.
It is not known where El Bakali is currently located. The police do have strong indications that he was taken to southern Spain in a car in July. He probably spent some time there in Marbella, but was not found during house searches at various addresses.
He may still be staying in the Marbella area, but it could be that he is now hiding somewhere in the Netherlands. “The police are very aware that El Bakali may now be in Morocco, where a number of his relatives live.”
