(Motorsport-Total.com) – Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was in the first free practice session for the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne (Formula 1 2019 live in the ticker) the best time saved. The world champion scored a time of 1: 23.599 minutes and landed subdued in front of the two Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc.

Vettel was missing 0.038, Leclerc 0.074 seconds on Hamilton's best time. As surprising as Ferrari has been seen by most experts as the clear favorite. But: the first free trials are nothing more than a curl up for the weekend. The time should not be given much importance at this time.
It seems clear, however, that once again the top three teams from last season are ahead. Only 0.193 seconds behind Hamilton Max Verstappen landed in fourth position and set from the point of view of Red Bull, a fragrance brand. Pierre Gasly in the second Red Bull will start at the beginning: eighth, 1,333 seconds back.
Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) had established the 2019 Formula 1 season for the first time after 20 minutes, 1: 26.5. He increased to 1: 23.866 minutes during the session and finished fifth. If he was as fast as Hamilton in the beginning, he fell back towards the end – and even made one of the few turners in the first session.
The return was the prelude to Renault: "It's not a particularly nice start to the season", annoys team leader Cyril Abiteboul in an interview with "Sky". His drivers Nico Hülkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo occupy positions ten and 17. Hülkenberg remains in the pits for a long time. "We had an insignificant problem, but we had to remove the underbody and reprogram the control electronics, which took a long time," says Abiteboul.
The cause of the obligatory rupture of Hülkenberg was a rupture of the electronics. His R.S.19 had to be restarted. In the end 1416 seconds were missing. The backlog does not disturb Abiteboul: "In midfield it is super short, we drove very conservatively, even with fuel and we also tried some parts of the development both in the front wing and in the rear."
The teams that confirmed their strong test times in Barcelona were Alfa Romeo (with Kimi Raikkonen on P6), Toro Rosso (P7 and P13) and Haas (Kevin Magnussen on P9). Toro Rosso debutant Alexander Albon (13./+1.631) also caused the only red flag when he slipped into the wall in the first nerve curve and hit his nose.
Racing Point is back on the field – despite the updates from the winter tests Lance Stroll has not passed the 15th place. It was two tenths of a second faster than team-mate Neo Sergio Perez. Williams landed as feared behind him. Robert Kubica was almost a second faster than rookie George Russell. But the worst non-Williams missed two seconds.
Incidentally, the aspect of speed measurements, in which McLaren and Toro Rosso were leading, was also interesting. In none of the three sectors does a Mercedes appear in the Top 6 of the best top speeds – and only one Ferrari: Leclerc with 306 km / h in second place in the third sector.
The second free practice session in Melbourne (Australia) takes place at 6:00 am German time. It will be broadcast on German TV by n-TV and Sky and also in ORF (Austria).
