Manchester United were once believed to be in the leading position to get Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund. The rumors circulated so loudly a few weeks ago, but now they have died down as progress has never been seen.
Price is an obstacle for the ‘Red Devils’ to get the 20-year winger. Dortmund is said to have asked for at least 108 million pounds, a heavy amount for MU in the midst of the crisis due to the pandemic.
Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher believes United are also being more careful about their shopping. In the last few seasons, MU has often bought players more expensive than they should have.
The case of Harry Maguire, for example, where MU is fully controlled by Leicester City about price. MU initially had the opportunity to recruit Maguire worth 70 million pounds in 2018, but refused because they felt that figure was high.
In the end, MU returned to the negotiating table a year later and bought it for 80 million pounds. That does not yet talk about expensive unsuccessful recruits like Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez, to Romelu Lukaku.
It becomes a serious problem when MU’s caution is now facing the demands of the fans.
“I think United will eventually pay what they have to pay. Ed Woodward (MU CEO) is cursed if he does it and cursed if he does not do it,” Carragher told Telegraph and quoted Metro.
“When United paid a lot of money for a number of players in the past, we all laughed and said ‘They’re doing it again!’ People scoff at Woodward because selling clubs can get 10 or 20 million pounds more from him.”
“But now Borussia Dortmund is asking for 108 million pounds for Sancho and because United didn’t pay him right away, everyone is criticizing it again,” he added.
