JAKARTA – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) launched the National Movement for Cash Waqf (GNWU) and inaugurated the Islamic Economic Brand at the State Palace, Jakarta today. Jokowi said that the potential for waqf in Indonesia is very large.
“The potential for waqf is very, very large in our country, the potential for waqf assets per year reaches Rp. 2,000 trillion and the potential for cash waqf can exceed Rp. 188 trillion,” he said, Jakarta, Monday (25/1/2021).
Therefore, Jokowi asked his staff to expand the scope of the use of waqf. No longer limited to worship purposes, but developed for socio-economic purposes.
According to him, the launch of the national cash waqf movement is very important. Not only to increase public awareness of the sharia economy, but also to strengthen social solidarity to overcome poverty.
Jokowi said that as a country with the largest Muslim population in the world, it is time for Indonesia to provide an example of the practice of managing waqf that is transparent, credible, professional, trustworthy and has a productive impact on the economic welfare of the people.
