The sweetest of all defeats.
This Thursday evening, Spezia Calcio won a historic rise in Serie A, the first in its history. The club from the city of La Spezia however lost 1-0 in the final return of the play-offs against Frosinone of Alessandro Nesta. But since they had won 1-0 in the first leg, and they finished ahead of Frosinone in the standings (3e against 8e), it is indeed Vincenzo Italiano’s men who take the elevator.
Spezia therefore joins Benevento and Crotone, who had achieved their rise at the end of the regular season. However, the club came back from a long way: in the semi-finals of the play-offs, it had lost 2-0 on the lawn of Chievo, but had managed to reverse the trend on the return, winning 3-1 (with including a goal from the Frenchman M’Zola).
Not too much time to celebrate all this: Serie A is supposed to start on September 19, in less than a month.
The holidays are going to be short.
