Jakarta. A lecturer at the University of Indonesia was reported to the police for libel after he published a fake photograph of Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan showing him a clown face on his Facebook account.
The case of defamation against Ade Armando, who teaches communication at the faculty of social and political studies at the university, was presented on Friday by the Jakarta legislature Fahira Idris.
He cited the electronic information and transaction law when he filed a complaint with the Jakarta police and presented a screenshot of the Facebook post.
"[The documented picture] can be clearly seen on Ade Armando's Facebook account. This is the governor of Jakarta in uniform during the inauguration in a photograph belonging to the provincial government. But his picture has been modified in a figure similar to the Joker with a caption that could be classified as defamation, "said Fahira.
The caption under the photograph reads: "The evil governor begins outside the ousted minister".
Anies was fired by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo from his position as Minister of Education before challenging the 2017 government elections in Jakarta.
"In my opinion, what Ade Armando has done must be investigated. I, as a resident of Jakarta and a member of the Council of Regional Representatives [DPD] representing Jakarta, am troubled and so are other Jakartans. I have to do something," he said Fahira.
Ade, 58, was aware of the police complaint and shared a Fahira tweet saying he was going to the Jakarta police headquarters.
In various media, he said he had not created the meme in question, but admitted that he deliberately shared it because "it represents what I want to say to Anies and to the public".
