ALeftists and AfD supporters have above-average confidence in the police. Almost half (47 percent) of those surveyed who are close to the left, said in an online survey by the opinion research institute Ipsos that the statement “I trust the police in Germany” was fully or entirely agreed.
With 57 percent of AfD supporters, this value was also quite low. Ipsos interviewed 1,000 people in Germany last week and also asked about identification with parties.
Two thirds of Germans trust the police
Overall, two thirds of the respondents (66 percent) trust the police. Around one in ten (eleven percent) have little or no trust. The police have the greatest confidence among supporters of the SPD (82 percent) and the CDU (80 percent), followed by supporters of the FDP (75 percent), the Greens (73 percent) and the CSU (70 percent).
The survey also shows that 43 percent of people place security above their personal freedom. Almost as many (40 percent) are undecided, 18 percent disagree.
Ipsos said it conducted a representative online survey among 1,000 participants in Germany between the ages of 16 and 75 on January 9 and 10, 2020.
