The metallic gray of the chassis plays the card of sobriety.
From the start, we are pleasantly surprised by the quality of manufacture and the use of aluminum contributes to this resolutely premium aspect. This material has a good taste and does not retain fingerprints, and is also very easy to clean.
When the screen opens, we immediately notice that if this laptop is a Yoga, it does not belong to the convertible family. Its screen can therefore not open to 360 degrees and is limited to 180 degrees, which already allows the screen to be flat.
The screen, in 16: 9 format, occupies 82% of the front panel – the average for laptops being around 80%. We would have preferred a 16:10 or 3: 2 screen, as on the Dell XPS 13 where the Huawei MateBook 14 for thinner edges and better integration.
The keyboard for its part is simply excellent. Lenovo’s expertise can be found in these characteristically shaped keys, with a rounded bottom edge. Their stroke is very good and facilitates use during long sessions.
No fingerprint reader on our test model; however, it is available as an option. However, you can quickly authenticate with the Windows Hello compatible infrared camera in the upper notch of the screen.
The connection is rather diverse for an ultraportable. There are two USB-C, two USB-A, one HDMI, a headphone output and a microSD card reader. As usual, we would have preferred an SD card reader, since it is itself compatible with microSD via an adapter.
Charging takes place via USB-C using a 65 watt adapter.
Inside our test model, we find an AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor as well as 8 GB of LPDDR4-4266 memory, unfortunately soldered to the motherboard; a bad point for scalability.
This Yoga Slim 7 offers however a rare argument on ultraportables: two M.2 slots to increase storage capacity. Be careful though, if the slot occupied is in the usual 2280 format, the free slot is in the shorter 2242 format. This is a less common format and therefore compatible with a smaller number of SSDs.
The heat is well managed by the Yoga Slim 7. As we explained in a dedicated news, the Lenovo Vantage application offers several modes that play differently on the thermal envelope of the processor. In short, whatever the mode chosen, the temperature does not exceed 42 ° C.
And the shows are also well managed since they are most of the time inaudible. Even at full throttle, the fans don’t exceed 41dB – with an audible sound signature, but very even and not disturbing.
Our test Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 is equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 4500 U processor (6 cores / 6 threads, base frequency 2.3 GHz, turbo up to 4 GHz). This allows it to be placed above the Intel Core i7-10510U present in the Huawei MateBook 14. On the other hand, it bows to the Ryzen 7 4700U of theAcer Swift 3 SF314-42.
These results only give an overview of the capabilities of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7. Using the Lenovo Vantage app, it is possible to force a lower power envelope on the processor. We have indeed devoted a news dedicated to this mode and the efficiency of the Ryzen 5 4500U:
To summarize: if the performances are necessarily degraded a little with a thermal envelope of less than 30 W, they compete with those of the processors Intel and Ryzen of series H, having them a limit fixed at 45 watts.
This processor is therefore capable of quietly dealing with multimedia use, web browsing, and even photo or video editing.
The graphics part (AMD Radeon Vega 6) does not disappoint in game either and allows you to familiarize yourself with the 55 fps in Overwatcheven in the busiest passages. With Diablo 3, the average is 32 fps (details set to “high”). However, it is no match for dedicated cards, even entry-level, such as the Nvidia GeForce MX350 found in the Huawei MateBook 14.
The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7’s screen is a 14-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Its borders are a bit wide for our taste on the top and bottom of the screen.
That being said, the slab provides a good colorimetric performance. We note a delta E of 1.6, a sign of perfect color reproduction – it is estimated that the colors are faithful when the delta E is lower than 3. The color temperature was measured at 6938 K, which is slightly lower. above the video standard (6500 K), but that does not prevent it from making a screen suitable for all types of graphics work.
Our measurements also show a very good contrast (1971: 1), unfortunately marred by the glossy coating can turn the screen into a real mirror in the brightest environments (average reflectance 48%). And the maximum brightness of the panel, relatively low (376 cd / m²), unfortunately does not allow this effect to be countered.
Finally, the afterglow of the screen is measured at 20 ms, which avoids the effects of blurring around moving objects on the screen. No problem watching a movie then.
Excellent chassis construction.
Very good keyboard.
Controlled thermal management.
Good connectivity for an ultraportable.
Two M.2 slots available to increase storage (M.2 2280 + M.2 2242).
Good performance thanks to the Ryzen 5 4500U processor.
A glossy mirror slab.
Impossibility of adding RAM.
We could list the long list of qualities of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7. It does not have to be ashamed of premium ultraportables like the Dell XPS 13 and the Huawei MateBook 14. It offers better battery life, better performance, more ports, and a second M2 connector for SSD. This ultraportable is of course not free from flaws, such as its soldered memory or its overly glossy screen coating, but overall, this is a very good surprise from Lenovo. We can only recommend it.
