In the last match of the group stage, the most serious challenge awaited – the vice-champions of the last two world championships – Polish footballers. In order to get to the round of 16 of the championship, Lithuania had to beat the title rivals by at least two goals.
However, the Poles, who had not conceded a single goal before this match, were too tough for the Lithuanian national football team. Lithuania lost 1:4 to its opponents and ended its performance at the World Championship.
The Lithuanians entered this match with several sick players, and one team member, Marius Linkevičius, could no longer help Lithuania in this match. Before the match, both national teams showed their support for Ukraine by spreading the country’s flag in the stadium and wearing support shirts.
Lithuania, which played against Poland in 2019 and lost to it 0:6, also saw the powerful play of its opponents in this match. The opponents scored the first goal in the 3rd minute. Ten minutes later, the second goal in our goal fell from the foot of the defender Davidas Gineitis.
This episode was followed by two more successful Polish attacks and the opponents scored two more times in two minutes.
At the end of the quarter, Lithuania ran several times to the Polish goal, but did not manage to hit the goal.
The second half started a bit more successfully for Lithuania. At the beginning of the half, Matas Radžiukynas shot from a good position, but his shot was blocked. However, a minute later, the same M.Radžiukynas played with Arnas Levonauskas, and the latter scored the first goal of the Lithuanian national team in this match.
It is worth noting that this was the first goal in this championship, which was missed by the world vice-champion Poland, and it was scored by Lithuania.
After that, the Poles had several chances, but Mantas Šumskis defended several dangerous shots from the opponents with a beautiful game.
Until the end of the match, nobody managed to score again and Poland triumphed 4:1. The latter team, having won all four victories, took first place in Group C.
At that time, Slovenia, having won three matches, remained in second place in the group with 9 points, while Lithuania, having defeated Morocco and Costa Rica, remained in third place in the group with 6 points.
