Livio Suppo, Honda’s blunder: Throw out Pedrosa and Marquez’s ‘golden boy’

RiderTua.com – Livio Suppo said that letting Pedrosa go and only ‘golden boy’ Marquez was Honda’s fault… Livio Suppo is one of the most famous team managers in the MotoGP paddock. The Italian man for the first time entered the world championship with Ducati. And in 2010 became part of Honda. Suppo was the manager of the Ducati team when Casey Stoner won his first world title. And he is the ‘architect’ of Repsol Honda. After retiring in 2017, Alberto Puig took over Suppo’s job as Repsol Honda team manager. Puig made some decisions that Suppo didn’t like at all. One of them clearly ‘let’ only Marquez who is very strong with the Honda motorcycle.

Livio Suppo, Honda’s Mistake: Eliminate Pedrosa and Son Gold Marquez

In an interview, Suppo analyzed the problems of Repsol Honda. The team spent several seasons with less significant results. Marc Marquez’s injury in July 2020 triggered this situation. But according to Suppo, the absence of a strong racer is not the only weakness. “Since last year, it has become very clear that the project is not going in the right direction. But signals from the track and the drivers themselves are ignored,” he said.

After retiring in 2017, Alberto Puig took over Suppo’s job as Repsol Honda team manager. Puig made some decisions that Suppo didn’t like at all. “Many mistakes have been made, and I am disappointed because I am very close to Honda and its history. And there’s no question. It was a mistake, for example to let Dani Pedrosa go. It shows that the development of the bike is heading in a direction where only Marc can be a strong rider,” Suppo said.

The situation Honda is currently facing is, they are still doubtful about his return Marc Marquez. Last season, the team tried to make up for the lack of results with the signing of Pol Espargaro. However, the 30-year-old racer was slow to adapt to Honda. In fact, good results were only achieved after Marquez returned.

“Honda is betting everything on just one driver, something that might cost them in the future. There was absolutely no preparation after Marc was injured,” Suppo explained.

In addition, Suppo also regrets the steps taken by the brand with the golden wing logo. “I am very concerned for Honda, who now have to struggle like this. Because when I left the team after the 2017 season, they were very strong and became a reference for all the drivers,” he recalled.

“They have to find the right path. And I wish Marc Marquez well because his contribution was very basic. Because the results of all the other Honda riders have not been good. Which shows that the development of the motorbike may also not be good,” concluded Suppo.
