Former Hawker Britton spinner Bevan Lisle, a senior advisor during Queensland's Goss and Beattie governments, will become the new NSW Labor leader Jodi McKay's chief-of-staff.

The appointment, expected this week, ends a lengthy process to fill the key role.

Who would take the position, after a drawn out (and often tense) leadership contest between McKay and new transport spokesman Chris Minns, has become a notable topic of discussion among Labor staffers in Macquarie Street over the past week.

Lisle, currently at the Tracey Cain-led Australian Public Affairs Lobby Shop, started his lengthy political career advising former Queensland attorney-general Dean Wells.
