Madeira. An escarpment on a popular beach has collapsed

On the Portuguese island of Madeira, there was a landslide on the popular Formosa Beach in the southwestern suburbs of Funchal. At least three people were injured.

The escarpment suddenly collapsed near the hotels, and huge boulders buried, among others promenade by the beach.


Madeira’s autonomous government has announced that there are no fatalities, but stipulated that the rescue teams present on site will also conduct searches at night.

Medical services, quoted by SIC television, informed that three people, including a child, were injured as a result of the collapse of the escarpment. Their life is not in danger.

Madeira – the promenade at the popular beach is closed

The Prime Minister of the Madeiran government, Miguel Albuquerque, has announced the closure of the Formosa Beach promenade until further notice. He informed that the causes of the landslides were being investigated, the condition of which, as he noted, was checked in June this year.
