Merkel appreciated the European Commission's possibilities to stop the "Nord Stream – 2"

MOSCOW, May 16 – RIA News. The European Commission will not be able to stop the construction of the Nord Stream – 2 gas pipeline, despite the adoption of a new EU gas directive, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said. His words are reported in the Handelsblatt newspaper.

"The project is almost completely approved and the new gas directive offers the European Commission more opportunities to challenge (implementation of Nord Stream – 2. – Ed.). However, it will not prevent the project", – he underlined.

The chancellor called the Ukraine the "key point" in the construction of "Nord Stream – 2".

In his opinion, Kiev should remain a gas transit country, despite the appearance of a new pipeline.

The Nord Stream – 2 project involves the installation of two gas lines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year from the coast of Russia across the Baltic Sea to Germany. It will also cross the territorial or exclusive economic zones of Finland, Sweden and Denmark.

The project was implemented by Nord Stream 2 AG. Gazprom will invest half of the funds in it, and the rest will be invested by European partners: Uniper, Wintershall, OMV, Shell and Engie.

Germany supports the construction, emphasizing the commercial interest of the project. According to the Minister of Economy Peter Altmeier, Nord Stream 2 will contribute to the stabilization of gas supplies to Europe.

Also Austria, which is interested in a reliable supply of natural gas, spoke about the project. In Vienna, they stressed that the US intentions to impose sanctions on companies participating in the project "raise questions from the point of view of international law". As the Austrian manager OMV Rainer Seele noted, Moscow has long established itself as a reliable supplier of energy resources.

The project is also supported by Norway, whose government holds a 30% stake in Kvaerner, one of the pipeline contractors.

I am against the United States, the Ukraine, Poland and some other states. According to critics, Nord Stream 2 is a political project. At the same time, the Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that its character was exclusively commercial and the goal was to increase the energy security of Europe.
