The wife of Mexican drug boss Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera was arrested on Monday at Dulles International airport in the US state of Virginia. She is suspected of involvement in international drug trafficking and of assisting in her husband’s escape attempts, the U.S. Justice Department said in the indictment.
The 31-year-old woman, Emma Coronel Aispuro. was a regular at her husband’s trial two years earlier. She has both Mexican and American citizenship.
Coronel is suspected of involvement in the illegal smuggling of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine into the United States. She may appear before a federal court in Washington on Tuesday.
She is further suspected of assisting with the escape by El Chapo in 2015 from Altiplano prison in Mexico. After the cartel boss months later again was arrested she allegedly tried to prevent him from being extradited to the US.
El Chapo, the boss of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, was eventually sentenced to life in prison in the US in February 2019 for smuggling large batches of drugs and involvement in multiple murder plots. He is serving his sentence in a prison in the state of Colorado.
The Mexican drug boss is well known in pop culture for his many jailbreaks. Netflix made the popular series about his life El Chapo. Unlike many other cartel bosses, El Chapo did not shy away from publicity. An interview with the American actor Sean Penn for the magazine Rolling Stone eventually led to his arrest in 2016.
