The National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico reported this Sunday that during this day there will be very heavy to intense rains in the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatán, southeast of the country, due to the passage of the storm tropical Gamma.
In a statement, the SMN pointed out that for this day torrential punctual rains (from 150 to 250 millimeters (mm)) are forecast over the north of Yucatan and intense punctual rains (from 75 to 150 mm) in Campeche, Quintana Roo and Tabasco, as well as very strong (50 to 75 mm) in the north of Chiapas.
These rains “could cause landslides, river overflows and flooding in low-lying areas,” he said.
The Meteorological Office pointed out that these rains “are generated by the interaction of tropical storm Gamma, in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and Tropical Wave Number 38 in the southeast of the country.”
In its report at 10:00 am Central Mexico time (15:00 GMT), the agency specified that Gamma was located 65 kilometers (km) north of Río Lagartos and 185 km east-northeast of Progreso, both locations in Yucatan.
The phenomenon is moving north at 4 kilometers per hour (km / h), with maximum sustained winds of 95 km / h and gusts of 110 km / h. Its cloud bands maintain the potential for extraordinary rains in the state.
This Sunday, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Gamma strengthened slightly in the last hours after leaving the Yucatan peninsula and going into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Experts predict that the strengthening will continue in the next 12 hours, when it would reach winds with force of about 100 km / h.
