Microsoft says goodbye to its AltspaceVR metaverse to push Mesh

Tech giant Microsoft will leave support for your platform metaverso AltspaceVR starting next March 10. However, this does not imply that the company has abandoned its projects in the metaverse. Quite the contrary; managers will seek to direct all their efforts towards the design and improvement of Microsoft Mesh.

When AltspaceVR was first released; Microsoft had a vision of creating a place where people from all over the world could connect and socialize in real time. Company executives shared the view that virtual reality (VR) could be a fun venue for immersive gaming.

Microsoft emphasizes that its most important belief rested in the “social power of VR.” This power rested in the ability “to bring people together, create connections, and create shared experiences.”

Over the next few weeks, we encourage the many creators and developers that are part of the AltspaceVR community to host final events and download their content.

We want to thank everyone who has used AltspaceVR over the years to bring a lovely and enriching dimension to the world.

Microsoft Mesh would differ from other proposals such as Meta and Apple in at least two aspects. First I would put a strong emphasis on holographic content. This point implies that there would be no need to resort to completely ignoring external reality through a series of virtual worlds as others have done metaversos.

On the other hand, Microsoft Mesh is more oriented to organizational interventions. Hence, it would abandon or at least limit the focus of gaming and mass consumption to serve as a business tool.

“As we look to the future, we see the opportunity for virtual reality to expand beyond consumer to business and now we have an even bigger goal: a more open, accessible and safe version of immersive experiences in the metaverse. To achieve this, we have made the difficult decision to end the AltpaceVR platform on March 10, 2023 and shift our focus to support immersive experiences powered by Microsoft Mesh.”

Microsoft has echoed that “the decision has not been easy”, since it is “a platform that many have come to love”, but that with Mesh it aspires to “build a platform that offers the widest opportunity to all those involved, creators, partners and clients”.

Microsoft Mesh would allow people to connect with a holographic presence, as well as sharing between spaces and collaborating from anywhere in the world. According to the companyby incorporating the mixed reality experiences of Mesh In an organization, you can “enhance virtual meetings, conduct virtual design sessions, help others remotely, and host immersive virtual meetings to increase productivity.”

“We look forward to what’s to come, including our launch of Microsoft Mesh, a new platform for connection and collaboration, starting with enabling workplaces around the world. In the near term, we are focusing our VR efforts on workplace experiences, learning from and alongside our first customers and partners, and making sure we provide a foundation that enables security, trust and compliance. Over time, we hope to extend the consumer experience a well.”

However, the company has decided to take a step forward and bet on Mesh. Now the competition between the three technological giants (Meta, Apple and Microsoft) It can be summarized by its different bets: Virtual worlds, VR and 3D simulations respectively.

“Mesh enhances 3D design reviews by allowing users to join anywhere on any device. Whether physically present or holoported, partners can view and annotate 3D models in real time. All content is retained between design sessions so teams can quickly pick up where they left off. This shared understanding ignites ideas, sparks creativity, and forms powerful bonds.”
