Minister Heil against mask requirement in Bundesliga

Federal Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil (SPD) has spoken out against the proposal to wear a mask in football. “I don’t think games with masks are conceivable. In talks with the German Football League, other practical solutions are currently being worked on constructively,” said Heil der Picture on Sunday. His ministry recently proposed wearing masks during the Bundesliga games in an internal paper.

He understood many people’s desire for the “restart”, said the politician, but occupational safety also applies to professional footballers and club employees. The DFL’s proposals “therefore need to be carefully examined,” says Heil. His ministry is solely responsible for the assessment of occupational health and safety, and whether and when the Bundesliga will start playing again will be decided elsewhere.

Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz from the SPD has spoken out in favor of resuming the Bundesliga season next month. He would be very happy “if things could start again in the second half of May”, “as far as it is responsible for athletes and coaches”.

The finance minister and long-time mayor of Hamburg also expressed a wish: “Corona should not prevent the rise of HSV at the last minute,” said Scholz.
