The United States is developing a missile defense system (missile defense) due to the possibility of a sudden nuclear attack on Russia, said the First Deputy Chief of the Main Directorate of Operations of the Russian General Staff Viktor Poznikhir. His words are quoted by Interfax on Wednesday 24 April.
"The deployment of anti-missile weapons near our borders creates a powerful US strike potential for the possible launch of a surprising nuclear missile attack on the Russian Federation," he said.
According to the general, under these conditions the Russian side is forced to take retaliatory measures. In particular, we are talking about equipping strategic offensive forces with promising missile systems, such as Yars, Avangard and Sarmat.
On Wednesday, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported that the United States had documented the anti-Russian focus on its missile defense system.
On 19 April, the Kommersant newspaper, citing sources, reported on Russia's proposal to the United States to conclude an agreement on the prevention of nuclear war. As the newspaper notes, this initiative has remained unanswered.
Previously, Washington has suspended the fulfillment of the treaty's obligations on the elimination of intermediate-range and short-range missiles, citing a systematic violation of the terms of the agreement by the Russian side.
