Musician Jimmy Buffett, author of the Margaritaville anthem, dies

American singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffettbest known for his 1977 hit ‘Margaritaville’has died at 76 years old.

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1 surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” the statement on his website reads. “He lived his life like a song until his last breath and many will miss him without limits.” The cause of death was not given.

Buffett’s classic laid-back anthem ‘Margaritaville,’ about living on the beach with a drink in hand, was on 22 weeks on the Billboard chart and helped him launch his music career and build a business empire.

Known as the ‘Mayor of Margaritaville,’ he edited nearly 30 albums study of melodies country, folk and tropical. He also created a line of resorts, restaurants and retail stores that forged his relaxed image.

Born on December 25, 1946 in the state of Mississippi and raised in Alabama, Buffett began playing the guitar in college and performing on the streets and clubs of New Orleans.
