Charlie Brooker will not use the coronavirus pandemic as inspiration for his “Black Mirror” series. The reason? The reaction of the population to the health and social crisis.
For five seasons, the screenwriter of the series developed by Netflix since 2015, has been interested in the most dramatic effects of technological progress. But while he is confined to his home in London, the author has changed his register and is currently writing only comedies. At least that is what he said during an interview with the Guardian.
“I’m not writing stories about companies falling apart right now, so you can think about it as you like.” If you look at the stories of dystopias, it becomes straightforward for everyone. But, in this crisis, you can see, we find ourselves mostly watching “Tiger King” on his sofa and worrying about his neighbor and asking him if he needs a bag of potatoes. What we are seeing at the moment is much more coherent and reassuring, ”he explained.
Not realistic enough
Charlie Brooker is convinced that if he wrote a story today inspired by the coronavirus health crisis, viewers could never consider it realistic. “If you try to write a story about a pandemic which is ravaging the world, and the people who turn against each other, people would say: Uh no, that’s not what happened” , he added.
Charlie Brooker returned to the air Thursday, May 14 with “Antiviral Wipe”, on BBC Two, which is interested in the media treatment of the health crisis and confined life.
