New Mazda 3 was probably the most important first of the autumn – and, apparently, the most controversial. Changes in design and technology have proved to be close to the revolutionary and leave almost no one indifferent. I am sure there are many people who will tell me better about the new Mazda technique, but I would like to add five kopecks to the design debate. My name is Nikolay Pronin, I do industrial design, sketch design and graphics, and at the same time I keep a blog in which I try to analyze the design of the most interesting cars. The new "treshka" naturally won me over. Mazda states that the car has become the development of Kodo's design philosophy, whose essence is clean and minimalist. But is this Mazda 3 as simple as it seems at first? Let's try to understand it.
In this article I will focus on the external appearance, leaving the inside behind the brackets, because there are many things that define tactile sensations that are impossible to understand without contacting the car. Even the exterior is easy to evaluate from a distance.
Thus, Mazda 3 is presented immediately with two types of bodywork: a sedan and a sedan. And despite the fact that they are very similar, interchangeable parts of the body, with the exception of headlights and hood, I could not find them. That is, with the back is so obvious, but initially the nose looks the same, but if you look carefully, then the bumper, and the grille, and the front doors of the hatchback with the sedan are individual. Pay attention to the difference in the shape of the top of the front door frame: the sedan is sharp, almost triangular, because the four-door Mazda 3 is five millimeters above the sedan.
Everything suggests that even the front wings are not identical. A hatchback just behind the wheel arch is more "pulled" inside – in the design language this is called the negative surface. And its shape, this "dent" tends towards the bottom and towards the top. By the way, for this reason, the length of the side mirror of a sedan and Hatch is also different.
The plastic of the four-door body is formed by lighter horizontal lines that tend to stern. Together with them, the protrusions of the side wall are lengthened in length and the curve of the window frame on the rear upright, according to all the standards of the correct proportions, is exactly in the middle of the rear wheel. Although the line to raise the threshold, badly hooked to the lines of the bumper, appears strange and illogical.
The hatch is different: it only breaks the rules. The window line does not reach the wheel hub – no element is connected to it. The entire shape of the surfaces is directed slightly upwards, towards the rear rack, focusing the viewer's attention on it. And besides the lines of the threshold, the bonnet and the windows, there is not a single clear line on the side. All the plastic body built on the play of lights, shadows and reflections (reflections). This is the minimalism of design. And all the visible edges of the body are drawn by reflections and are constantly in a state of overlap, that is, they exist and do not exist simultaneously, depending on the direction of the viewer's gaze.
However, despite the fact that in the methods of implementation of the design of Kodo two Mazda were very different, in their physical and their technique they naturally remain twins. Their pitch is the same (2725 mm) and the proportions of each body type are normal front wheels. Three small wheels are positioned in the base, and if we consider it strictly between the hubs, then even more than four complete diameters are many, so a positive perception of the length is created. The front overhang on the front wheel is quite large – ¾ wheels, and the front roof pillar does not fall into the center of the front wheel and "clings" to the edge of the bumper. It is believed that closer to the hub passes an imaginary line of racks, plus the status and the impetuous looks like the car. However, you can see that Mazda has not imitated the proportions of rear-wheel drive, however, the sedan has a long nose balanced by a rear overhang, which fits the full wheel, and the sedan, on the contrary, focuses on the "cabin "moved forward.
I would dare to suggest that Mazda tried to give the proportions pyatidverke supercar, because a long nose, a short tail and taxis forward – this is almost a Lamborghini recipe. But I want to offer you an even more unexpected analogy. Take a look at the Veyron – after all, he and the physicist Mazda 3 in something similar. By the way, I think many are wondering how a sedan with such massive support will look on small basic wheels? Of course, Vidocq will not be much, but the trick is that Mazda does not have small basic wheels. After all, in the specifications published for the American market, Mazda has supplied only two dimensions: 215/45 R18 (as in all the front pictures with the brand) and 205/60 R16 as "base". I've specifically replaced the 18-inch wheels in the picture with 16-inch stamps to make you appreciate the difference. The result, obviously, is not so hot, but the question is not of size, because such "sixteenth" wheels are one millimeter larger than the 18-inch external wheels!
I want to once again focus on the most interesting Kodo design techniques, in my opinion. To understand its main feature, let's imagine a car without too many tinsel like headlights, windows and other minor elements. Leave only the volume.
The body is constructed from intersections of transformed spherical volumes. The spheres merge into one another, merge, subtract. Thanks to the control of the "docking" of these surfaces, at first sight it turned out to be a simple form, but in reality very complex.
And it was interesting for me to take a look at how far the Mazda in the production car has withdrawn from the promises made by the concept car Kai 2017. The difference was not so significant to focus on it, but in the process of comparison I found another proof that the sedan and the Mazda 3 sedan are two different cars in terms of style. Just look at the Mazda Vision Concept Car – we thought the new Mazda 6 would grow, but it turned out that many of the solutions were incorporated into the Mazda 3 sedan. And the hatchback, yes, is made with the Kai concept.
And another thing that maybe I can only see. If you have also watched the movie Interstellar, then you must remember the modulation of the black hole. So the Mazda designers, in my opinion, managed to make it appear on the sides of the body. Thanks to the complicated coupling of surfaces, they have built a real light trap, creating directional and controlled reflections. Arriving at its borders, the reflections begin to follow a predetermined trajectory, like the matter captured by the gravity of a black hole, and after having traversed the "horizon of events" of the surface, the light can no longer come out of it.
But this is particularly evident, strangely enough, not on the "troika" but on the Mazda Vision Coupé concept. Because of the extreme conformation of the surfaces and the less rigid structure for the construction of a concept, it is possible to fully appreciate this phenomenon: here there is a huge accretion disk, a painted side wall and a gravitational lens created by the threshold and a huge opening near the wing connector and the door. I can say: Mazda, you're just a space. Are you an agreement?
