Nineteen municipalities are candidates to house a detention house | Prisons

At the end of 2020, the Minister of Justice sent a letter to the governors requesting that, in consultation with the mayors, they look for locations for the detention houses. “All the governors have responded. They have forwarded the information to the various mayors to see if buildings are available to house the detention centers. In addition, contacts with the Buildings Agency and the analysis of their portfolio have also revealed real opportunities We are also in contact with Fedasil to find out whether there are other options,” said the minister.

Locations in Ghent, Genk, Liedekerke, Mol, Ostend, Steenokkerzeel, Roeselare, Wortel, Oudenaarde, Kortrijk and Ninove are being looked at, but final decisions have not yet been made.

The intention is that about 40 to 70 detainees can go to each detention house, in a less strict regime.
