In the Canadian province of Ontario, police arrested a 19-year-old man on Sunday night who was hitting the highway at 308 kilometers per hour in his father’s car. He drove more than three times the permitted speed.
The nineteen-year-old man appeared to have borrowed his father’s car, and a peer sat next to him. The driver had to hand in his driving license and he is being prosecuted for street racing and reckless driving. The car has been seized.
Reckless driving in Canada can lead to six months in prison and a fine of up to 10,000 Canadian dollars (about 6,600 euros). The driving license can also be revoked for two years.
Traffic officer Kerry Schmidt was speechless, he says in a video that he posted on Twitter. He has never encountered such speeds before and at first thought it was a joke when he saw a photo of the laser gun.
Schmidt says that a highway is not a race track and that this drive could have ended very quickly. He hopes that the man will not be able to get behind a wheel for a long time and adds that he thinks “this boy has something to explain to his father and mother on Mother’s Day if it turns out that the car is no longer in the garage in the morning . “
