No death in Portugal for the first time since March

In the popular holiday destination Portugal, for the first time since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in mid-March, there was a day without an officially confirmed death related to Covid-19. The health authorities said in Lisbon today that 106 new cases of infection had been registered within 24 hours.

The first coronavirus-related death was recorded in Portugal on March 16. At the time, it was an 80-year-old man who was infected with the SARS-Cov-2 virus. Since then, there has been no day without CoV deaths. In total, Portugal reported more than 51,000 documented infections and 1,738 deaths.

For a long time, Portugal was one of the countries in Europe that had come through the crisis relatively well and with few contagion and casualty numbers. For a few weeks now, however, there has been an increase in new infections, especially in the greater Lisbon area. The situation there has eased slightly in the past few days. The “lock-down” in several suburbs of the capital – less visited by tourists – was recently lifted.
