A new date for the postponed Olympic Games has apparently already been found. According to media reports, the Tokyo Summer Games will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021. Officially there is no decision yet. This could be announced later this week.
The Tokyo Summer Olympics canceled for this year are expected to be postponed by almost exactly one year. According to reports from Japan and the USA, the opening ceremony is targeted for July 23, 2021. The closing ceremony is said to increase on August 8th. The games canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic were originally scheduled for July 24 through August 9, 2020.
Official decision probably this week
Officially there is no decision yet. However, this could be announced later this week, as Yoshiro Mori, the President of the Organizing Committee (OK) indicated on Monday (30.03.20). “I suspect IOC President Bach may contact me later this week,” said Mori after an OC executive meeting. In spring and summer, consultations between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the organizing committee were addressed. A decision will be made after weighing the pros and cons, says Mori.
Paralympics from August 24th to September 5th?
According to the “New York Times”, this decision has already been made: The IOC and the organizers in Tokyo had agreed on the summer date in the Super sports year 2021 agreed. The Japanese television broadcaster NHK cited information from the organizing committee that the summer date is preferred as an option. The Paralympics would take place from August 24th to September 5th.
“The games are scheduled to take place in the summer, so we should think of a time between June and September,” quoted the Japanese news agency “Kyodo” Mori.
DOSB: Summer 2021 very understandable
The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) would welcome a staging in summer 2021. “The postponement by exactly one year would be a very understandable decision,” said DOSB President Alfons Hörmann. “Team Germany will prepare and prepare professionally for each of the possible periods.” The time window also discussed in spring should not be an option, because currently no one knows how the pandemic will develop. Of course, this also applies to the summer of 2021, but a later appointment seems safer at first.
NBC is probably setting the pace
John Coates, head of the IOC coordination committee, had already indicated that the preferred date could be between the Grand Slam tennis tournaments in Wimbledon (end of July 11th) and New York (start of August 30th). The main reason for this time window is likely to be the wishes of television. The U.S. television network NBC is paying the IOC $ 12 billion for TV rights to the Olympic Games from 2014 to 2032. July / August would be acceptable for NBC: All major U.S. sports except baseball have a summer break or are in the off-season.
The final of the European Football Championship, which has also been postponed to 2021, is scheduled for July 11. The World Swimming Championships (July 16 to August 1) should give way.
