Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis has died at the age of 89

Oscar-winning film and theater actress Olympia Dukakis has died at the age of 89 at her home in New York, her agent was quoted as saying by the AP.

She received an award from the US Film Academy for supporting female role in Moonstruck in 1988. Dukakis played the role of the mother of a young woman played by Cher, who also won an Oscar for her female role.

Olympia Dukakis described 1988 as “the year of Dukakis” because then her cousin Michael Dukakis, the governor of Massachusetts, was a Democratic presidential candidate but was defeated by George W. Bush.
