Noh London has also declared Paris the "climate emergency". The city council called on all politicians on Tuesday to implement the UN Climate Agreement of 2015, which was closed in the French capital. Paris wants to create a "Climate Academy" for young people. In addition, a permanent expert council is to be set up, which can be consulted on the topic.
Local elections will take place in Paris next year. Socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo recently announced a series of environmental initiatives. For example, the surroundings of the Eiffel Tower are to be planted more green and car traffic reduced.
Previously, the cities Vancouver, Oakland, London and Basel had already decided the "climate emergency". The French National Assembly had also called the climate emergency at the end of June, without, however, underpinning it with concrete measures. The parliament responded to a demand from the Fridays for Future movement.
The city council in Cologne also declared the climate emergency on Tuesday evening. The decision was expressly known to the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, said the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the future, it should therefore be examined in relevant decisions to what extent the measures or projects would have an impact on sustainability and climate protection. In addition, the city council should report annually on the consequences of CO2 emissions and also inform about measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf, Bottrop and Bonn had already proclaimed the climate emergency.
