Paris Saint-Germain eliminates Bayern Munich in the Champions League

Defending champion Bayern Munich was eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals of the Champions League on Tuesday. Last year Bayern Munich won the tournament by beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the final. The 0-1 in Paris on Tuesday was not enough to brush away the defeat of a week earlier. England’s Chelsea also reached the semi-finals at the expense of FC Porto.

Bayern Munich had to undo last week’s 2-3 defeat on Wednesday in Paris, again without the Polish top scorer Robert Lewandowski. In the first half, opponent Paris Saint-Germain had four big chances for the opening goal, but the team of trainer Mauricio Pochettino hit the bar once and the post twice. Five minutes before the break Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting put the 0-1 on the scoreboard. Lewandowski’s replacement headed the ball in from close range.

After half time, Paris Saint-Germain went looking for a goal, but attacker Neymar was a toe length short to make it 1-1. Bayern Munich continued to believe in a second goal, but the Germans did not come to really big chances.

Chelsea – FC Porto

England’s Chelsea also recently defeated FC Porto (0-1) in the last four of the tournament. In Porto, the team of German trainer Thomas Tuchel had won 2-0. On Tuesday, the Portuguese only scored the opening goal through the Iranian Mehdi Taremi in injury time.

The other two quarter-finals will be played on Wednesday. Then Manchester City defends a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid visits Liverpool. The Spaniards won the first game 3-1.
