The variant in question, B.1.177.77, has never been very successful. It briefly set up in Spain in the summer of 2020, appeared here and there in other European countries last year, but soon lost out to the alpha variant, which was pushed out last year by Delta, which in turn is now is rapidly being supplanted by omikron.
