BADUNG, KOMPAS.com – Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated, most people born in 1980 and under have antibodies to fight the virus monkey pox.
Because, during that period they had received the chickenpox vaccination which was valid for life.
“So for friends who were born in 1980 and below like me, the elders are protected. Maybe not 100 percent, but protected,” said Budi at the press conference “Health Working Group Meeting G20” in Nusa Dua, Badung, Balion Monday (22/8/2022).
He explained that the vaccination caused the spread of the monkeypox virus in Asia to be very low compared to Europe.
The reason is that the vaccination process in Europe is not carried out thoroughly because chickenpox is rapidly disappearing.
This is different from Asia, especially in Indonesia, which has been running for a long time so that the vaccination process is carried out thoroughly.
“Indonesians because in the past because of the smallpox pandemic, people like me were vaccinated against smallpox so they still have antibodies. Thus, it is hoped that people born in 1980 should still have antibodies,” he said.
Budi explained that the fatality or death rate in this monkeypox case was very low compared to the Covid-19 virus.
According to WHO records, from 35 people infected with monkeypox, only 12 people died.
The case of death is also not caused by a virus but due to complications.
Therefore, he appealed to the public not to panic too much with the cases of monkeypox that had been detected in Indonesia.
Moreover, the monkeypox virus is easier to detect than Covid-19.
Budi said the monkeypox virus has two types, namely West Africa and Central Africa. Each type also has a different fatality rate.
He confirmed, for one case that has been found in Indonesia has a low fatality rate.
“monkey pox there are two types namely West African and Central African one fatal and one non-fatal. And usually there are many in Europe and those in Indonesia are not fatal,” he said.
In addition, Budi asked the public to continue to apply health protocols and maintain cleanliness to avoid this virus.
Next, people are asked to avoid physical contact with people who have been exposed to the virus.
With the characteristics there are pus spots similar to boils in the bandan skin area.
“If there are people who already have freckles, report them immediately and don’t come into physical contact with people who have freckles. They can clearly be seen on the hands and face,” he said.
The Ministry of Health previously announced the findings of the first monkeypox case in Indonesia on Saturday (20/8/2022).
This case was found in a patient in Jakarta, who is an Indonesian citizen (WNI).
The finding of the first confirmed positive case of monkeypox in Indonesia is the result of the patient’s early detection.
The patient had just returned from a country that was included in 89 countries with the findings of monkeypox cases on August 8 last.
